We Mediate provides family mediation and MIAMs to separating and divorcing couples throughout Cheshire. Based in Macclesfield and accredited by the Family Mediation Council, we help families across the county resolve arrangements for children, finances and property calmly, affordably and online.

Cheshire is a large and varied county, from the towns of Macclesfield, Crewe and Warrington to the villages of the east and the historic city of Chester. Wherever you are in Cheshire, separation brings the same difficult questions about children, the home and finances. Family mediation offers a calmer, quicker and far cheaper way to answer them than going to court, and because we work online, we can help families right across the county without anyone needing to travel.

Family mediation is a voluntary process in which an impartial mediator helps you and your former partner work through the issues and reach a considered agreement. The mediator does not take sides or impose a decision; they help you both find a way forward that works for your family.

How It Works

Every mediation starts with a MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting), a private, individual meeting with a mediator. Once both parties have attended, and if mediation is suitable, joint sessions are arranged. All of ours are held online, so whether you are in Macclesfield, Chester, Crewe, Warrington or anywhere else in Cheshire, you take part from home.

Cheshire’s Family Courts

If a matter does need to go to court, family cases in Cheshire are dealt with at several venues depending on where you live, including Crewe, Chester and Warrington County and Family Courts, with Manchester Civil Justice Centre serving as the regional hub for the east of the county. Your MIAM certificate is accepted wherever your application is heard, so you can complete your MIAM with us online and use it at your local court.

The April 2024 Rules

Since 29 April 2024, the courts in England and Wales expect couples to have genuinely considered resolving matters away from court before applying. Mediators must explain all forms of non-court dispute resolution, and a party who unreasonably refuses to attend a MIAM or engage may face costs consequences. For Cheshire families, a MIAM is now an important first step.

Do you cover the whole of Cheshire?

Yes. Because our mediation is conducted online, we help families right across Cheshire, from Macclesfield and the east to Chester and the west, without anyone needing to travel.

Which family court will deal with my case in Cheshire?

It depends where you live. Cases are heard at venues including Crewe, Chester and Warrington County and Family Courts, with Manchester Civil Justice Centre as the regional hub for east Cheshire. Your MIAM certificate is accepted wherever your case is heard.

How much does family mediation cost?

A MIAM is £130 on weekdays and £150 on Saturday mornings. Sessions are £130 per person per hour, with a typical 1.5-hour session costing £195 per person. A £500 voucher is available for eligible child-related cases.

Do I need a MIAM before court?

In most cases, yes, before applying for a Child Arrangements Order or Financial Order, unless a valid exemption applies. If mediation does not go ahead, the mediator can issue your court certificate.
